Unable to get job on the New York docks,. Smith, who said he was graduated from La Crosse, Wis., State College last June, stowed away on the Queen Mary on her last trip. Los Angeles U.B Dr. Lee de Forest, whose vacuum tube made radio, television, radar and talking pictures possible, celebrated his 80th birthday to day and looked forward to "10 more years of hard work." The "father of radio" was honored at a luncheon given by the National Association for Better Radio and Television. The famed inventor is still working in his laboratory in a Hollywood office building, but he Is not working to improve the electron tube. . "I'll let the new men take over that work," he said. Dr. de Forest has spent the last few years experimenting on ways of obtaining usable electric current from the heat of metals. ' The man who started his career at the age of 13, when he drew plans for a perpetual motion machine, claims many "firsts" among his inventions.
